A lecturer at the Department of Languages and Linguistics of the Osun State University, Ikire Campus, Dr. Wale Ojoniyi, is currently in trouble following the release of a video tape of his alleged sex escapade with a 400 level English student of the institution, Mercy Ikwue.

The student, who released the over 30-minute video clip, recorded it in a hotel room.

Although some claimed the lecturer raped the student, real sexual intercourse was not captured in the video.

There was also no attempt by the man in the video to coerce the student to cooperate with him.

In a petition written to The Punch , some students of the university claimed that Ojoniyi was instrumental to the suspension of the female student, after she was allegedly caught for examination malpractices.

On her return to the university after the one academic session rustication, the petition claimed the lecturer mounted pressure on the student for an amorous affair but the lady resisted him.

It was further learnt that the lady confided in some persons, who advised her to set a trap for Ojoniyi by agreeing to his love advances.
She eventually went to the agreed hotel room and met him.

In the video, which was also made available to our correspondent, the female student set up a laptop directly opposite the bed and pretended to be watching the ‘Things Fall Apart’ film on it but she was recording the sexual activity.

Although there was no act of sexual intercourse captured in the video, the man in the video was seen stark naked and caressing the student occasionally.

In the video, Ikwue was seen throwing her blue top on the bed from an angle she knew the camera could not cover. She also ensured that the camera lense did not capture her when she removed her trousers.

She wore her top throughout the 34-minute duration of the show and used the bedsheet as a wrapper.

The man came to the bed naked oblivious of the trap set for him and dangled his manhood throughout the show.

The audio quality of the video clip was poor but some of the conversations can still be heard.

The female student said at one point, “Give me my transport. I am not asking for any other money, just give me my transport fare.

“Why is your thing (private part) dropping like this, haven’t you done it in recent time.

“Before I went on suspension, why didn’t you plead on my behalf? You knew about it joo.”

Ojoniyi when asked by our correspondent if he was aware of the video said he had heard of it.
He said, “I also heard of the video. It is being investigated.”

Asked if he believed that the video was a handiwork of those who might want to bring him down, he said, “ People can do anything, but I cannot be brought down.”

Police confirm killing of university don in Benue

The police in Benue have confirmed that a lecturer at Mkar University, Gboko was killed by unidentified gunmen at his residence in Gboko.

ASP Moses Yanmu, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Makurdi that the lecturer was shot on the chest by gunmen on Tuesday.

He said that the late university don died at Benue State Teaching Hospital Makurdi where he was rushed to, adding that the police had commenced investigations to arrest the gunmen.

Yanmu appealed to people with useful information that would lead to the arrest of the culprits to volunteer it to security agencies.

Rivers University student among suspects paraded by police for kidnapping, robbery

A student of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology is among other forty-one suspects paraded by the state Police Command.

The paraded suspects include alleged perpetrators of heinous crimes in different parts of the state, including kidnapper, armed robbers, car theft, cultism among others.
Some of those paraded confessed to committing the crime.

One of the suspects told DAILY POST that, “I was arrested when I went to deliver the ransom we collected from one customer. I went to give the ransom to the boys that did the job when police came. The person we kidnapped is our tenant.

My brother’s tenant. One lady and one Igbo man. We took them to Abia state. But when I went to give them the ransom, they gave me five thousand naira before police now came to arrest us.”

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni who addressed the media on behalf of the Commissioner of Police said the Police had continued to make gains against criminals in the state.

DSP Omoni said the Command carried out successful operations in Ahaoda-West, Ahaoda-East, Emohua, Degema, Asari-Toru, Gokana, Eleme and other flash points in the state.

JAMB reacts to allegations of candidates’ imposition on universities

The Registrar of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, on Friday, denied reports that the board was imposing candidates on universities for admission.

Oloyede, who stated this in Benin, Edo State, during his visit to JAMB’s zonal office, said ”I know many of you are bothered and you want to hear from me about the admission.

“There is no stalemate; after due consultation with the Senate, House of Representatives, because they were worried and invited us, the matter was totally resolved,’’ he said.

He added that education and examination regulatory institutions “like NBTE, NCCE, NUC and JAMB itself, were also dully consulted’’.

“There is no ambiguity on what will happen. As it has been announced by the Minister of Education, there will be no written examination, no written Post-UTME examination by any institution.

“Apart from that, every other thing remains as it used to be, because the authority, autonomy and independence of the academic boards or the Senate of the respective institutions remain sacrosanct.

“They should determine their criteria, following the directives of the Federal Executive Council to all Federal universities about what should be merit, catchment areas, educationally-disadvantaged states and other things.

“Things remain the way they used to be. The only addition this year is, for now, there should be no written Post-UTME examination.

No departmental cut off mark for AAU 2016/2017 admission - SUG DOI

The Student Union Government, SUG, Director of Information,DOI,  comrade Cletus Oribhabor has debunk claims of departmental cut of mark been paraded on social media.

He said that the university management of Ambrose Alli University has not by any means release any departmental cutoff marks.

He further said that the management is still silent on admission matters for the 2016/2017 academic session and has not released any departmental cutoff marks in any of the departments.

In a related statement  by the Vice Chancellor Prof Ignatius Onimanwo,
also debunk the rumour, saying that admission will be given to the departments listed below as regards the lost  of accreditation.

Meanwhile the management is curently working out modalities through which cutoff marks will be released as soon as possible in all the departments.

Benue State University Graduate Stoned To Death in Makurdi

In what will come across as a really tragic development , a university graduate has been killed in a most brutal manner .

Kelvin Oche Ogebe was a graduate of State University (BSU ), from the Computer Science department , who was killed recently .

According to a report on Idoma Voice , the young man stoned to death by two men in Makurdi .

The incident reportedly took place on Thursday by 6 pm

The deceased who passed out from the Computer Science Department of the school, was reportedly engaged in a fight with the guys who allegedly hit him with a stone and beat him to death .

It was further revealed that the matter has already been reported to the Benue State Police Command.

Uniport Prof. Kidnapped by gun men

Reports say Professor John Okorie, of the Engineering Faculty, University of Port Harcourt has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen.

It was gathered that the lecturer was kidnapped on his way home at close of work yesterday.

A source at the University, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent, said the kidnappers had not made contact with either the family of the victim or the UNIPORT management.

The Public Relations Officer of the University, William Wodi said Professor Okorie is the Director of the Offshore Technology Institute at the University.

Wodi complained that the kidnapping of lecturers at the University had become rampant and was adversely affecting the academic environment on campus.

He said members of staff who resided on campus now lived in fear, while overseas scholars who usually collaborated with the institution were now unwilling because of security concern.

The UNIPORT spokesman called on security agencies to step up surveillance around the university campus to protect life and property.

FG deny converting Kaduna Poly, Yabatech to universities

The Federal Government has denied reports that it had converted Kaduna Polytechnic and Yaba College of Technology to universities.

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abubakar Abdulrasheed, who made this remark in Abuja, when he received the Executive Secretary of National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Dr. Masaudu Kazaure in his office, said the report was untrue.

Kazaure also revealed that dichotomy between HND and BSc holders in the civil service had been eliminated as Polytechnic graduates who acquired Post Graduate Diploma can now rise to the pinnacle of their career like their university counterparts in the Civil Service.

NOUN Female student sent to prison for killing neighbour with hot water

An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday remanded a university student, Mabel Bassey, in prison for bathing her neighbour with hot water and killing him.

Bassey is to be remanded at Ikoyi Prisons pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Bassey, a student of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and resident of Surulere Street, Ojo, Lagos, was arraigned before Magistrate Bola Folarin-Williams on a charge of murder.

She was alleged to have poured hot water on Efe Okotie ,38, on July 2 at their residence which resulted in his death.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Olatunde Kehinde, the deceased had advised Bassey to desist from her promiscuous lifestyle which did not go down well with her.

“Out of anger, she bathed the late Okotie with hot water.

“The deceased died six days after the incident due to the severe burns he suffered from the hot water,’’ he told the court.

The offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011 which prescribes death sentence for offenders.
The case has been adjourned to Nov. 4. (NAN)

KADPOLY wins Enactus national contest

It was a crossfire of innovative ideas at the Entrepreneurial Action In Us (ENACTUS) competition held last week at the Civic Centre on Victoria Island, Lagos. Students from about 25 tertiary institutions presented their entrepreneurship projects to compete for the first prize at the four-day contest.

A panel of judges comprising business leaders and industry professionals evaluated the students’ projects, which were aimed at solving challenges facing rural communities and improving the lives of people in an environmentally sustainable way.

The event with the theme: Redefining the future, started on Monday with a cultural fair, where the participants showcased their cultures.  This was followed by the opening round on Tuesday. The participating schools were divided into four groups, with each having four to five contesting teams.

The opening round was greeted with pulsating moments, as students slugged it out to move to the next stage. At the end, 12 teams progressed to the semi-final stage, including the 2015 champion – Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna (KADPOLY) – and a new entrant, Covenant University (CU).

Other teams that moved to the semi-final included Ekiti State University (EKSU), Federal Polytechnic, Idah (IDAH POLY), University of Uyo (UNIUYO), University of Port-Harcourt (UNIPORT), University of Lagos (UNILAG), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Niger Delta University (NDU), Kogi State University (KSU), Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

An innovation summit with the theme: The impact of entrepreneurship on the development and sustenance of an emerging market, was held as part of side events marking the contest. It was sponsored by Sahara Group. The summit was designed to promote entrepreneurship as a tool for economic empowerment and national development.

Managing Director of Sahara Group, Mr Tonye Cole, gave business insights from his personal life and business experience to inspire the students. He told them nothing was impossible for them to achieve if they possessed entrepreneurial skills.

During the interactive session that followed the keynote speech, which was moderated by the Vice President of First Bank of Nigeria PLC, Bernadine Okeke, students learned from panelists comprising industry professionals, including the Managing Director of Bank of Industry, Waheed Olagunju, Executive Director, Enterprise Development Centre, Peter Bamkole, Founder, Mobility Arena, Mr Yemi Adegboye, and Mrs. Ayodeji Megbope of No Leftovers Limited.

The final round was held on Thursday, starting with a keynote lecture delivered by the lawmaker representing Bayelsa East in the National Assembly, Senator Ben Bruce.

At the end of the contest, KADPOLY clinched the first prize. It was the second time the polytechnic won the national contest. ABU became the first runner up, while Covenant University was announced the second runner up.

For clinching the first prize, KADPOLY will represent Nigeria at the ENACTUS World Cup Challenge coming up in Ontario, Canada in September.

Kogi varsity students elated over resumption

Students of the Kogi State University (KSU) have heaved a sigh of relief as they returned to school to complete their semester examinations. The students were sent home for four months, following an indefinite strike by a school workers over the government’s inability to pay their arrears of salaries and other allowances.

The school was reopened last week when the government and the striking workers struck the deal to end the industrial action. As the students returned, theyvhoped both parties would sustain the agreement, praying against another strike.

Some of them, who spoke with CAMPUSLIFE, decried the strike, describing it as an “unnecessary distraction and interruption”. Some students were philosophical about it.

Adeleke Omofaye, a 300-Level Education student, expressed bitterness, describing the strike as the worst period in the time he spent on the campus. He said he did not pray for another strike till his last day on the campus.

Adeleke called for understanding between government and the university workers to avoid a situation where the school would lose its credibility, because of constant disruption of its academic calendar

Drama as union suspends, reinstates Speaker

A drama played out at the 10th plenary of the legislative arm of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) Students’ Union Government (SUG). Its Speaker, Olakunle Balogun, was suspended for alleged misconduct. Ten days after, the Speaker was reinstated, report YOMI AYELESO (400-Level Business Administration) and SOLOMON ODENIYI (400-Level Mass Communication). 

The 10th plenary session of the legislative arm of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) Students’ Union Government (SUG) started as a serious business, but ended with drama. Penultimate Monday, members of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) converged for a meeting. But the conduct of the Speaker, Olakunle Balogun, rattled his colleagues, who moved a motion for his indefinite suspension.

The SRC members said Olakunle walked out on them to attend another meeting when important issues were to be discussed. It was learnt that the Speaker called for an adjournment, but the motion was not properly moved. As the Speaker walked out, members moved a motion to suspend him.

In a statement, the Clerk, Christopher Arowolo, said, the Speaker failed to discharge his official duties. This, he said, was contrary to Section 42 (11) and Article VI of the union constitution, which states: “Speaker shall perform all duties incidental to his office.”

Olakunle was said to have walked out during the sitting when issues concerning the welfare of students were being discussed. Members also accused the Speaker of using the name of the union to solicit financial help without the knowledge of the SRC.

Christopher said: “The Speaker has also failed to convene the number of statutory sittings per semester. All these amount to gross misconduct. The Speaker has, therefore, been directed to hand over all union documents and property at his disposal to his deputy.”

CAMPUSLIFE learnt that 13 members supported the suspension of the Speaker, while eight moved against it. Three senators were undecided.

The Deputy Speaker, Emmanuel Akinrele, confirmed that the embattled Speaker “stormed out” of the plenary. He said: “The Speaker, from the outset, has been diligent. Members are not happy with the way he walked out of the sitting, while pressing issues were being discussed. They have punished him by suspending him and the suspension is indefinite. It may last till tomorrow, next week or next month.”

According to the member representing the Male Hall of Residence, Toyeeb Ayobami, the Speaker was frustrated by the pressure mounted on him by members, but said Olakunle should have been patient.

Update: LASU suspends three students for attempted abduction

The Lagos State University (LASU) Students’ Union Government (SUG) president, Tayo Sekoni, has escaped being abducted by some candidates contesting for positions in the aborted National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) convention, which held in Gombe State.

Tayo was returning to his hostel last Thursday when the assailants  stopped him at Obadore area of Iba. He said his refusal to support the candidates, who are LASU students, resulted in threats to his life. He accused the students of an attempt to eliminate him.

In its reaction, management suspended three students fingered in the alleged abduction. They are Oladayo Mojeeb Babatunde, 500-Level, School of Transport, Fatai Adebanjo Adekoya, 500-Level Faculty of Law and Fola Kosoko.

Narrating his ordeal, Tayo said he narrowly escaped assassination on his way to his hostel. He said they trailed him to LASU gate and stopped the bus he was in at Obadore area.

Tayo said: “They ordered me to come down. I asked ‘for what?’ They began to drag me from the bus in an attempt to abduct me. But, my friends and other LASU students, who were on the same bus with me repelled the assailants.

“In the course of struggling with them, Fola slapped one of my friends named Yusuf. We decided not to retaliate as we sensed danger.”

According to Tayo, the assailants said he did not support their candidacy at the convention. “Could I have done much  for an ambition that was nursed four days to election?” Tayo asked.

The union leader said: “When we got back to school from Gombe, Fatai openly threatened to kill me for not supporting him. I took the threat lightly, because I felt the election was not a do-or-die affair. They went further, threatening to kill me. They instigated some students against me in an attempt to throw the school into turmoil. Fola claimed he is ready to butcher me and that there is nothing anybody could do to them, because they are untouchable.”

In the build-up to the aborted NANS elections, it was learnt that LASU fielded two candidates. NANS stakeholders met and decided that “ex-students” must not be allowed to contest.

Tayo said Fola is an ex-student, who did not have the right to contest in the election. LASU, he said, supported another candidate, who is still a student.

A few days to NANS elections, Tayo said Fatai called to inform him of his plans to contest for NANS  Public Relations Officer. The union president said it was too late to declare ambition for an election that would be held in three days.

Tayo said: “Being a brother to me, I gave Fatai a word of encouragement and wished him the very best in his quest. But, I was surprised when Fatai led a gang of touts to attack me during the convention. Must we play politics of death and violence? Is election a do-or-die affair?”

The union president enjoined students to be vigilant and be wary of people, who he said are bent on throwing the school into turmoil because of NANS election.

Students flee for safety as police invade TV College

Some students of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Television College (TV COLLEGE) in Rayfield, Jos, the Plateau State capital, escaped being shot by a team of policemen and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) during a pandemonium that followed a protest at the Plateau State Government House.  AUGUSTINE ANYANWU reports.

There was pandemonium at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Television College (TV COLLEGE) in Jos, Plateau State, last Thursday. Policemen attached to the Government House in Rayfield went wild, firing gunshots and teargas canisters indiscriminately as they chased students into the college campus.

The students were on field practice when they ran into a group of youths protesting the killing of Saf Ron Kulere of Bokkos, Da Lazarus Agai, by unknown gunmen. The Bokkos youths peacefully marched on the Government House, but they were dispersed by a joint team of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and mobile policemen.

The students, who watched from a safe distance, saw the youths’ protest as newsworthy and brought out their digital cameras to record the scene. This did not go down well with the security operatives, who ran after the students.

Sensing trouble, the students ran back to their campus, but the security men chased them, firing guntshots and teargas canisters.

At the college main gate, some of the students were apprehended, maltreated and harassed by the rampaging officers. Some had their digital cameras seized; others were whisked away. When other students got wind of the development, they mobilised to rescue their colleagues from the officers. This, however, led to a confrontation. The officers threatened to shoot any student who stood in their way as they attempted to seize more cameras.

The students prevented the officers from maltreating their colleagues, who went for field practice. This resulted in a fracas. The officers fired more shots and teargas to disperse the growing crowd of angry students. Some students were injured in the ensuing chaos.

Uren Makut, a graduating student, escaped being shot when she attempted to take pictures of students being maltreated by the officers at the college gate. A policeman pointed his gun at her as she ran away from the scene.

IMUS law student gun down by cultist

There was pandemonium yesterday after a young man was shot dead at Imo state University, Owerri,IMSU, by suspected cultists.

The police in Imo state have confirmed the identity of a fresh graduate of Imo state University, Owerri, IMSU, who was murdered in his cold blood by fleeing gunmen mid Tuesday.

police confirmed his identity to be Obrin Ibekwe, a newly graduated student who was doing his clearance in preparatory for the mandatory one year National Youth Service corps, NYSC, program.

Ibekwe was gunned down inside a gutter at the back gate area of the University around 2:5pm Tuesday.

police who said that they have condoned off the area, have evacuated his lifeless body to the morgue, while investigation has been launched to ascertain the reason for the senseless killing.

POST JAMB: UNILAG set to screen candidates

The University of Lagos on Monday says it will go ahead with its screening of prospective candidates for admission into the 2016/2017 academic session as scheduled.

The institution’s Deputy Registrar, (Information), Mr Toyin Adebule, said this in an interview with the news men in Lagos.

Adebule gave the university’s position against the backdrop of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) withdrawing the list of recommended candidates for admission, earlier sent to the various universities.

JAMB in the statement signed by its Head of Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, stated that the withdrawal was to ensure that the senate of each of the universities performs its statutory functions.

News agency of Nigeria reports that UNILAG had, last month, announced that it would begin screening candidates, who chose the institution as their first choice with a cut-off point of 200 and above, between today Wednesday August 3, 2016 and August 24, 2016.

UNIBEN Students Petition Lecturer For Academic Victimization And Assault

Students of the Department of Foreign Languages of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have petitioned the university authorities over the misconduct of a lecturer, Stella Omonigho, who was acting as the representative of the department head, Austin Moye.

According to the petition, Mrs. Omonigho, among other actions, ordered a cancellation of the students' dinner and award program a few minutes before its commencement.

She was said to have ordered the cancellation because the students had not filled the venue before she arrived there at 4:30 PM.

Mrs. Omonigho was accompanied by the staff adviser, Gloria Shuaibu, while giving the order for the cancellation of the event.

Both lecturers were said to have invited campus security officers to eject the students from the venue, declaring that it would no longer hold.

In the petition copied to the Vice Chancellor as well as faculty and departmental offices, the students demanded a refund of the money they spent on hiring the venue, the return of food and drinks bought for the cancelled event, as well as an investigation of Mrs. Omonigho for academic victimization.

According to the students, their explanation to Mrs. Omonigho and Mrs. Shuaibu that the event was a dinner and was slated to start a bit later was rejected.

They also said Mrs. Omonigho, assisted by campus security men, seized the drinks and food meant for the event and took them away.

Some executive members of the Foreign Languages Students' Association (FOLSA), who tried to explain to the security men that having paid for the venue entitled them to its use, were assaulted by the security officers.

The students stated in the petition that they paid N2,500 each to participate in the program on 29 July but were denied their anticipated experience despite all preparations.

FOLSA executive members, who approached the lecturer to demand an explanation for the arbitrary cancellation of their event and assault on them, said Mrs. Omonigho threatened to ensure they fail in their examinations, an action that carried a strong whiff of academic victimization.

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, and President, Association of African Universities, Prof. Olusola Oyewole, has said universities need a free hand to decide on the quality of the students they want to admit.

He stated  that the current unitary system whereby only JAMB scores is depended on may not really be reliable in determining the good quality of students that should come into the system.

He added that there is need to sustain post-UTME or look for other means of ensuring that students who are coming in through the JAMB are the qualified ones who also wrote the examination.

He also said that he is not sure that JAMB has the foolproof solution to the problems that it is facing .
