Update: LASU suspends three students for attempted abduction

The Lagos State University (LASU) Students’ Union Government (SUG) president, Tayo Sekoni, has escaped being abducted by some candidates contesting for positions in the aborted National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) convention, which held in Gombe State.

Tayo was returning to his hostel last Thursday when the assailants  stopped him at Obadore area of Iba. He said his refusal to support the candidates, who are LASU students, resulted in threats to his life. He accused the students of an attempt to eliminate him.

In its reaction, management suspended three students fingered in the alleged abduction. They are Oladayo Mojeeb Babatunde, 500-Level, School of Transport, Fatai Adebanjo Adekoya, 500-Level Faculty of Law and Fola Kosoko.

Narrating his ordeal, Tayo said he narrowly escaped assassination on his way to his hostel. He said they trailed him to LASU gate and stopped the bus he was in at Obadore area.

Tayo said: “They ordered me to come down. I asked ‘for what?’ They began to drag me from the bus in an attempt to abduct me. But, my friends and other LASU students, who were on the same bus with me repelled the assailants.

“In the course of struggling with them, Fola slapped one of my friends named Yusuf. We decided not to retaliate as we sensed danger.”

According to Tayo, the assailants said he did not support their candidacy at the convention. “Could I have done much  for an ambition that was nursed four days to election?” Tayo asked.

The union leader said: “When we got back to school from Gombe, Fatai openly threatened to kill me for not supporting him. I took the threat lightly, because I felt the election was not a do-or-die affair. They went further, threatening to kill me. They instigated some students against me in an attempt to throw the school into turmoil. Fola claimed he is ready to butcher me and that there is nothing anybody could do to them, because they are untouchable.”

In the build-up to the aborted NANS elections, it was learnt that LASU fielded two candidates. NANS stakeholders met and decided that “ex-students” must not be allowed to contest.

Tayo said Fola is an ex-student, who did not have the right to contest in the election. LASU, he said, supported another candidate, who is still a student.

A few days to NANS elections, Tayo said Fatai called to inform him of his plans to contest for NANS  Public Relations Officer. The union president said it was too late to declare ambition for an election that would be held in three days.

Tayo said: “Being a brother to me, I gave Fatai a word of encouragement and wished him the very best in his quest. But, I was surprised when Fatai led a gang of touts to attack me during the convention. Must we play politics of death and violence? Is election a do-or-die affair?”

The union president enjoined students to be vigilant and be wary of people, who he said are bent on throwing the school into turmoil because of NANS election.

LASU suspends three over attempt to abduct SUG President

Three students of the Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo, have been suspended indefinitely over an alleged attempt to abduct the President, Student Union Government (SUG) of the institution, ‘Tayo Sekoni.

The suspended students are Oladayo Mojeed Babatunde, a 500-Level student of the School Of Transport; Adebanjo Fatai Adekoya, a 500-Level student of the Faculty of Law, and a Fola Kosoko, who just completed his studies in the institution. He had earlier been suspended over his involvement in some fracas.

According to the school’s latest official bulletin, released by the Centre for Information, Press And Public Relations of the Vice Chancellor’s Office (LASU), the trio attempted to abduct Sekoni on his way home on Thursday, July 28, 2016.

The bulletin said the management of the school suspended the “students with immediate effect, for attempting to abduct the Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU) President ‘Tayo Sekoni, on his way home on Thursday, 28th July, 2016, pending their appearances before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee (SDC).”

It added that the “aforementioned students/graduate have been strongly instructed not to participate in the socio-academic activities of the prestigious Lagos State University until the suspension is lifted. In addition, the suspended students/graduate are not to be seen within the university premises except on invitation.”

LASU suspends 25 students over exam malpractice

Management of the Lagos State University, Ojo, have suspended 25 students for their role in examination misconduct.

Nine of the students were from the Department of Business Administration while five were from the Department of Sociology, three of the students were from the Department of Political Science while four were from the Public Administration department.

The university disclosed in a circular  by its Head, Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations, Mr. Martin Adekoya.

Adekoya said the students, who had been directed to appear before the Examination Misconduct Panel, risked expulsion if they failed to report.

The institution’s spokesman, who added that the Senate of the university had already ratified the suspension, noted that the concerned students would not be allowed to participate in any activities on campus until the suspension was lifted.

Meanwhile, LASU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lanre Fagbohun, has inaugurated a five-man committee to investigate the alleged mismanagement of the properties of the Student Union Government of the university.

Hard Work Pays As Lagos State University Reward Students with 4 million Naira

The Lagos State University have reportedly gifted 160 students with a total of N4 million. The students were rewarded for making 4.5 Cumulative Grade Point Average and above during the 2015/2016 academic session.

The Vice Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, presented the cheques to them on behalf of the school management on Friday, June 17, at the Ojo Campus.

While presenting N25,000 to each student, the VC congratulated them and urged them not to relent their efforts.

He said: “ We are proud of you, but you must work harder to sustain the grade.

“Do not relent in your efforts because you were celebrated today .”

The Vice-Chancellor also urged the other students to work harder “to join the success train so that they will be rewarded also."

Dean of Students Affairs at the institution, Dr. Olufemi Obayori also gave words of encouragement.
He said: “ To the generality of students here, it is never too late to join the ranks of the chosen.

“It is possible.
“You can do it ."

Omoworare Oluwatobi , a 200-level medical student who made 4.95 CGPA, attributed her feat to God’s mercy and hard work.

Oluwatobi said: “I will continue to pray and study harder to ensure that I graduate with a first class. ”

Of the 160 students, 35 were from
College of Medicine, another 35 from the Faculty of Management Sciences , 32 from Faculty of Social Sciences and 34 from Faculty of Science.

Thirteen students were from the Faculty of Education , nine from Faculty of Engineering and two from Faculty of Arts.
