FUTO NEW VICE CHANCELLOR TALKS TOUGH ON NEW PROJECTS


Students and Staffs of Federal University of Technology, Owerri gathered at the arts auditorium,  Hall of Excellence, popularly known as (1000capacity hall) on Monday 20th June, 2016 for the first general assembly of the 7th substantive Vice Chancellor of FUTO.

The event witnessed a large turn out of so many dignitaries including the principal officers of the university, the Deans of schools and units, head of departments, professors, staff and students of the institution.

In his speech, Prof. Francis Eze started by thanking God for enabling him emerge as the vice chancellor.

He equally thanked and appreciated all those who have supported him in this race, most especially members of the 10th governing council, his wife and kids and all others.

He further went ahead to read his mission statement which he titled “DRIVING THE CULTURE OF EXCELLENCE” and he categorized it into three segments which includes:

Staff and Students welfare, Infrastructural development and Administrative affairs.

Based on staff and students welfare, he said his administration will do the following:

Introduction of school of Basic medical sciences, accreditation of more departments without accreditation or interim accreditation, repositioning the ICT unit, University Computer Center, skills acquisition center to enhance practical training of staff and students, promotion of staff based on merit and as at when due, introduction of a functional multimedia and e-learning approach in lecture halls, restrategizing the class adviser approach to reduce the number of spill-over students, sponsorship for staff training to increase knowledge and effective Learning, peaceful negotiations with staff bodies like ASUU, NASU and presentation of awards to staff and students who have performed exceptionally well so as to encourage others to work hard.

He further went on to state that his administration will work within the limited available resources.

On the area of infrastructural development, he said that his administration will provide the following: completion of the ongoing projects as soon as possible, completion of staff quarters/lodge on campus, beautification of the school hostels to enhance the aesthetic look of the institution, provision of more laboratories, workshops, lecture rooms for effective learning, provision of quality recreational places to enhance physical well being of students.

Introduction of “FUTO FILLING STATION” and ‘FUTO TRANSPORT LIMITED’ presentation of awards to the neatest hostel, construction of a more and bigger library since it’s the hub of our academic activities and equipping the library with recent and current books, journals and magazines.

The new vice chancellor further went on to say that on the area of administration, his regime will reorganize the security structure of FUTO to safeguard the lives of FUTO students and staff, compulsory ICT training for all staff and students, provision of free internet services around campus especially around the school hostels, senate and departments, appointments and promotion of staff will be on merit, prompt delivery of mails, provision of e-senate, e-examination, e-meeting and e-everything, town hall meetings will be held every semester to review students issues, collaboration with FUTO alumni will be worked upon and developing a good governance framework to enhance decision making in FUTO.

Finally, he enjoined everyone both staff and students to join hands in driving the culture of excellence in FUTO so that in the nearest future, FUTO will be the MIT of Nigeria.
