FG sacks striking doctors

The Federal Government has ordered the sack of striking resident doctors in the country.

The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, in a circular signed by Amina Shamaki, permanent secretary of the ministry directed chief medical directors (CMDs) and medical directors (MDs) of FG tertiary health institutions to fill the vacancies created by resident doctors who have “abandoned” their programme.

Resident doctors in government hospitals embarked on a nationwide strike on Monday.

The circular reads:
“It has come to the notice of the management of the ministry that some resident doctors in your establishment have voluntarily withdrawn from the residency training program by refusing to report for training without authorisation. public service rule, PSR 030402 (e) is relevant.

“This is in spite of the ongoing negotiations on their demands put forward by the representatives of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) under the auspices of the Nigerian Medical Association.

“In view of this development, you are hereby directed to replace all the doctors that have withdrawn their services, with others from the pool of applicants for the training programs in the various disciplines in order not to create ominous gap in training with attendant disruption of health care delivery in your facility.

“Meanwhile, the ministry is working with the panel on the review of the residency training programme in Nigeria, led by Professor Wole Atoyebi, the registrar of the National Postgraduate Medical College, to fast-track the development of a comprehensive blueprint for postgraduate training of doctors in the country.

“Please, ensure immediate compliance.”

Doctors remove live grenade from soldier’s head

Colombian military doctors have removed a live grenade from the head of a soldier, a local media report said on Friday.

It said that a soldier accidentally fired a grenade launcher during a patrol in Arauca, in the eastern part of the country, leaving a grenade embedded in his comrade’s head.

Transporting the victim by helicopter was too dangerous so the soldier was taken by ambulance to a military hospital in the capital Bogota.

However, the journey lasted eight hours.

It said the doctors built an improvised operating theatre in the car park due to the danger of the grenade exploding.

Meanwhile Surgeon William Maldonado said that the grenade was successfully removed.

“Five minutes were decisive, if the grenade had exploded, there would have been a tragedy.

“The patient’s condition has been stable since the operation on Sunday, however, up to four more operations will be needed to rebuild the soldier’s face,’’ Maldonado said. (dpa/NAN)

Former Chelsea Team Doctor Rejects N344.5m (£1.2m) Settlement

Eva Cameiro, the former Chelsea first team doctor, has reportedly rejected a £1.2m settlement from her former employers as shown by documents submitted to her employment tribunal.

Carneiro was last year criticized by Jose Mourinho, the then coach of Chelsea, and dropped from first-team duties after she went on to the pitch to treat Eden Hazard during Chelsea’s opening Premier League game of the 2015-16 season against Swansea.

Afterwards, Mourinho called Dr Carneiro and first team physio, Jon Fearn “impulsive and naive”.
Carneiro did not appear on the bench again for first-team duties and left the club soon after and now the doctor is claiming constructive dismissal against the football club.

The doctor is also bringing a separate legal action against Mourinho, who left Chelsea in December, for alleged victimization and discrimination.

Dr Carneiro’s lawyer said the former Chelsea manager would face at least one day of questions at the hearing in the case that is anticipated to be heard over seven to 10 days at the London South Employment Tribunal in Croydon.

Dr Carneiro’s lawyer, Mary O’Rourke QC, told the hearing that she is likely to take at least a day to cross-examine Mourinho – now manager of Manchester United – who did not attend the first day of the case. The tribunal was adjourned to today.

Legal papers submitted to the tribunal on behalf of Chelsea FC and Mourinho showed that Dr Carneiro had been “made an open offer of £1.2m to settle her claims”.

The football club’s legal team said it would show the club had taken these steps only because it believed that it was “in no-one’s interests that this dispute should be determined through litigations”.
