Euro 2016: France to play Portugal in final

France have qualified for the final of the European Championship, after a 2-0 win over world champions, Germany.

The hosts put up great resistance against waves of German attacks, to edge the semi-final clash played at the Stade Velodrome.

Referee Nicola Rizzoli punished Bastian Schweinsteiger for handball as the first half came to a close and Antoine Griezmann blasted his country into the lead.

Didier Deschamps men withstood more pressure in the second half, before Griezmann capitalized on a defensive mix-up to poke in the second.

France will now play Portugal for the trophy on Sunday evening.

Drug trafficking: Nigerian footballer sentenced to 8 years imprisonment in Cambodia

A 30-year-old Nigerian man, Francis Ihenwe Oderah, who claimed to be a footballer in Cambodia has been sentenced to 8 years in jail and fined 40 million riel (about $10,000) for drug trafficking.

According to DailyMail, Oderah was arrested in Phnom Penh’s Choam Chao commune in January with about 100 grams of meth in his possession.

The accused, during his hearing on June 7 by Judge Svay Tonh in Phnom Penh Municipal Court, reportedly admitted to have acted as a delivery man, insisting he was not a drug dealer.

In his ruling on Tuesday, Tonh ordered that the accused carry out his sentence in Prey Sar prison, where he had been detained since his arrest in January.

The Judge said, “Three phones and a passport taken from the defendant upon his arrest would be returned.”

Lionel Messi sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud

Barcelona superstar, Lionel Messi, has been handed a 21-month jail sentence for tax evasion, but is unlikely he will go to prison.

The player and his father, Jorge, were found guilty of three counts of tax fraud. Between 2007 and 2009, Messi and father failed to pay tax authorities €4.1million (£3.5m), which was tax on image rights earnings.

Jorge Messi absolved his son of any wrongdoing, with the 28-year-old claiming he did not “read the documents, but only signed them.”

Under Spanish law, a prison sentence under two years can be served on probation.

The court also ordered Messi to pay a fine of around £1.7m and his father to pay £1.27m.

3 wounded in Abakaliki over Ronaldo, Messi superiority argument

Three football fans were wounded in a free-for-all in a bar in Abakaliki on Saturday night over an argument about who is a better player between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
A correspondent who witnessed the melee reports that the incident occurred at the Kpirikpiri area of the town during the EURO 2016 second round match between Portugal and Croatia.
Portugal won the match 1-0 courtesy of a Ricardo Quaresma 114th minute-extra time goal that sent them into the competition’s quarter-finals.
Trouble started when a Ronaldo supporter identified as ``Marshal’’ celebrated widely as the Real Madrid star’s shot was parried into Quaresma’s path for the goal to the consternation of the Messi’s supporter named Obinna.
The duo had argued all night over the better player between both mega stars.
Immediately Quaresma scored, Marshal rushed to Obinna and mocked him, chanting ``I told you, I told you Ronaldo is the best’’.
Obinna who apparently was reeling with anger pushed Marshal and a fight ensued which made others inside the bar to intervene.
Matters, however, went out of hand when Marshal’s friends felt that Obinna’s friends were indirectly aiding him in the fight, thus making the fight instantly a free-for-all.
The bar owner, identified simply as Simon, rushed outside to invite people within the compound as those inside couldn’t control the situation.
However, calm was eventually restored but three persons, including Obinna were seriously wounded, while Simon immediately closed before the match could end.
On the development, Simon said that both fans always argued on the issue of Real Madrid and Barcelona superiority.
``I banned them from coming to my shop but this is their first visit since the commencement of the competition.
``It took the intervention of others inside the shop for me to allow them, as I was sure that their acrimony toward each other goes beyond Ronaldo and Messi supremacy,’’ he said.
Dr Obiora Ike, a youth activist, decried the level of fanaticism being displayed by young soccer fans in the state, especially over foreign clubs and players.
``This sort of incident occurs regularly and one wonders why people should fight and disturb themselves over clubs and footballers who do not even know that they exist.
``It is time the relevant authorities should seriously address this issue before it gets out of hand and curiously, none of these fanatics has such sentiment for Nigerian clubs and players,’’ he said.
DSP George Okafor, the State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, said that the incident had not been officially reported.
He added that the command always dealt with such issues decisively.
``Football hooliganism is a societal malaise as it is only foolish people who indulge in it,’’ he said.

Siasia names Mikel, Iheanacho, Iwobi in 35-man squad for 2016 Olympics

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has released a list of 35 players, as decided by head coach of the U-23 team, Samson Siasia, who will take part in the final training ahead of the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil.

Chelsea midfielder, John Mikel Obi and Watford striker, Odion Ighalo, make the cut.

Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi and Manchester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho are also included, despite speculation over their availability for the competition.
Siasia and his squad will have their training camp in Atlanta, USA, where Nigeria won the Olympic Gold 20 years ago.

The coach admits the choice is to “psychologically prepare my boys for victory in Brazil.”

A final list of 18 will be released before the team leaves for Brazil.

The Dream Team VI have been drawn to face Sweden, Colombia and Japan in the preliminary stage.

Russia 2018: Eagles Get Tough Draw In Group Of Death

The Super Eagles were on Friday handed a nail- biting draw for the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifying group as Nigeria will compete with Zambia , Algeria and bitter rivals, Cameroon .

Only one of these teams in Group B will qualify for the World Cup after facing each other twice at home and away.

The Algerian team, has among other stars Riyad Mahrez of Leicester City who emerged the best player in the English Premier League last season.

The tough draw no doubt was a result of Nigeria ’ s current football ranking which made the Eagles were placed in Pot 2 while seeded teams were in Pot 1 In this group the Eagles are third in terms of ranking .

Algeria are the number one on the continent and they are 32nd in world rankings while Cameroon are 9th in Africa and 58th in the world .

Zambia place 19 in Africa and 79 in the world . This is enough indication of how very tough the group is for Nigeria which currently have no substantive coach .

Group A of the qualifiers has DR Congo , Libya , Guinea, Tunisia, while Gabon , Morocco , Cote d ’ Ivoire and Mali are to compete in Group C .

Group D comprises Burkina Faso, South Africa , Cape Verde and Group E has Uganda, Congo , Egypt Ghana.

A minute silence was observed for late former Super Eagles Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, at the draw ceremony in Cairo .

“ It is a tough draw, but then I have always said that you have to beat the best to get to the World Cup .

Now we have the draw , we know how to prepare .

The preparation has to start right now and we must make good use of every single day leading to the kick – off of the series , ” NFF president Amaju Pinnick said .

Euro 2016: Italy, Spain qualify for Round of 16

Italy needed a late Eder goal, to beat Sweden 1-0 in the first game played on Friday at the European Championship.

It is their second consecutive win in the competition, after they saw off Belgium 2-0 and ensures they are though to the round of 16.

In the second game, Milan Skoda and Tomas Necid scored in the second half, to cancel goals from Ivan Perisic and Ivan Rakitic, as Czech Republic held Croatia to a 2-2 draw.

Spain are also through to the Round of 16, after a comfortable 3-0 win over Turkey in the last game.
Alvaro Morata got a brace, while Nolito also got on the scoresheet.

Victor Moses to be dropped from Nigeria’s Olympics squad

Victor Moses might be excluded from Nigeria’s squad to this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, as “a corrective measure”.

Moses opted out of last month’s friendly matches against Mali and Luxembourg, a decision that did not impress senior officials at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The Chelsea forward was pencilled down as one of the three over-aged players on Samson Siasia’s provisional list for the Olympics, but he could now be left out.

“It is as I said before, his withdrawal from those games (against Mali and Luxembourg) made us unhappy and it wasn’t the first time he was doing it,” a top official told AfricanFootball.com

“And now his name is on the Olympic Games list, but I’m not sure he will make it because we need to take some corrective measures for these players to understand the importance of playing for Nigeria.”

Chelsea retain Mikel Obi, Moses, Omeruo ahead of new season

Chelsea has confirmed that the club will be retaining the Nigerian trio of John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and Kenneth Omeruo, ahead of the 2016/2017 season.

Mikel Obi, who has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge severally, played more minutes under interim manager, Guus Hiddink, after Jose Mourinho was fired in December.

Moses and Omeruo spent last season on loan at West Ham and Kasimpasa respectively.

It remains to be seen if any of the Super Eagles players, will be part of Antonio Conte’s plans in the new season.

Other players with Nigerian heritage retained include Dominic Ayodele Solanke, Ugbo Ike and Tomori Fikayo.

Faculty of Arts of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) emerge champions of the Vice-Chancellor’s Cup

The male and female teams of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have won the Vice-Chancellor’s Cup in the Inter-faculty Soccer Tournament. (400-Level History)

Activities at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) literally moved to the Sport Complex  last week, as students participated in the Inter-faculty Soccer Tournament. It was another edition of the Vice-Chancellor’s Cup, which involved male and female teams from all the 15 faculties.

The contest started from the preliminary stages where the teams struggled for points to qualify for knockout. At the end of the knockout, two teams in each of the categories qualified for the final.

In the female category, faculties of Arts and Education teams made it to the finals; the male category, faculties of Arts and Life Sciences battled for the trophy.

The final matches started at 11am at the Faculty of Education football pitch. The atmosphere was colourful as the field was filled by supporters of the contesting teams. The female teams opened the match, which was a contest between the defending champion, Faculty of Education and Faculty of Arts.

The game started on a mild tempo, with both teams taking possessions of the ball and exhibiting confidence. The tempo, however, changed 10 minutes after the match started. Juliet Chinwuba of the Faculty of Arts scored, disrupting the opponent’s defence to place the ball into the net. After regulation time, the female match ended 1-0 in favour of the Faculty of Arts.

Barcelona near deal on Neymar case

Barcelona said on Friday they would decide next week whether to accept a deal with Spanish prosecutors over Neymar's contested 2013 transfer and avoid going to trial on tax evasion charges.

The star's transfer from Brazil's Santos was originally valued at €57.1 million by Barca, but Spanish judicial authorities estimated it at €83.3 million – with the difference allegedly going to Neymar, his family and Santos.

Prosecutors accuse former Barca boss Sandro Rosell, current president Josep Maria Bartomeu and the club of fiscal offences, alleging Barcelona avoided paying taxes on the difference.

According to the daily La Vanguardia, the club has reached a deal with prosecutors and the state attorney representing tax authorities that would see it pay out five million euros and avoid a trial.

If management push ahead with the deal with prosecutors, Rosell and Bartomeu will be absolved, La Vanguardia reported.

In a statement, the club said it held a meeting with its top leaders on Friday, adding that management would decide Monday whether or not to validate the deal with prosecutors.

In a separate case centred on the same transfer, prosecutors have also asked that Neymar, his father, Rosell and the club be tried, but on charges of corruption following a complaint by Brazilian investment group DIS.

DIS held 40 percent of Neymar's sporting rights when he played at Santos and claims it was cheated of its real share of the transfer to Barcelona.

Dortmund sign Turkey teenager

Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund have signed 18-year-old Turkey player Emre Mor on a five-year contract to 2021 as they look to boost their squad for next season.

Dortmund, who also lost to champions Bayern Munich in the German Cup final, signed midfielder Sebastian Rode from champions Bayern Munich last week and are close to agreement with Marc Bartra from Barcelona.

Mor, born and raised in Denmark, joins from Danish club FC Nordsjaelland. He has also been included in Turkey's Euro 2016 squad.

"Emre Mor is a highly gifted and versatile young player with tremendous development potential," said Dortmund's sports director, Michael Zorc.

Dortmund have already seen Mats Hummels and Ilkay Guendogan leave since the end of the season, with the former joining Bayern and the latter signing for Manchester City.

There is also speculation regarding the future of playmaker Henrikh Mkhtaryan and midfielder Nuri Sahin.

Messi grabs three as Argentina ease into quarters

Lionel Messi came off the bench to score a hat-trick in just 18 minutes on Friday as Argentina hammered Panama 5-0 and eased into the quarterfinals of the Copa America.

Argentina were 1-0 up at halftime thanks to a Nicolas Otamendi goal after just six minutes.

Panama lost Anibal Godoy to a red card after half an hour but the Central Americans held on until Messi, who missed Argentina's opening win against Chile with a sore back, replaced Augusto Fernandez after 61 minutes.

The Barcelona forward started gingerly but grabbed Argentina's second in the 68th minute by steering home a left foot shot after a rebound fell to him in the Panama box.

He scored a gorgeous second with a 25-yard free kick just nine minutes later and then with some fancy footwork in the box gave himself enough space to slot home his third and Argentina's fourth in the 86th minute.

Sergio Aguero, another substitute, made it 5-0 with a header in the final moments.

"My back was a bit painful at the start but it went away," said Messi, who was cheered every time he touched the ball by the 53 000 crowd in Chicago.

"I think we are where we want to be, which is getting better," he told TV cameras after the game.

The result came after Chile had beaten Bolivia in the other Group D game. Argentina have six points from two games, while Bolivia have none and are out.

Chile and Panama both have three and will face off on Tuesday to decide who join Argentina in the quarterfinals.

Goals in the first and last minutes of the second half from Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal were enough to help the reigning champions overcome Bolivia in Boston.

Chile had 75 per cent of the possession and 18 shots at goal to Bolivia's three and were far superior against the lowest-ranked team in the tournament.

Vidal put the Chileans ahead in the 46th minute but substitute Jhasmani Campos got an equaliser for Bolivia on the hour mark with a superb free kick.

Vidal then took advantage of a controversial penalty decision for handball to score the winner in the dying seconds.

Real Madrid will not try to sign De Gea this summer

Real Madrid will not try to lure David De Gea from Manchester United this summer.

The Spanish goalkeeper almost joined the La Liga giants ahead of last season, but the transfer fell through at midnight on deadline day.

De Gea has since signed a new contract at Old Trafford and has expressed his eagerness to work with new manager, Jose Mourinho.

Asked by Marca what he thought of Mourinho’s appointment, De Gea said: “To speak of Jose Mourinho is to talk about a winning coach and that is United’s philosophy and mine
“With that idea in mind, I’m certain we can build a great team. I welcome him.”

Madrid have now given up on signing Dea Gea and are focused on rewarding Keylor Navas, who had an excellent Champions League campaign, as they won their 11th European title.

Euro 2016: Hosts France open tournament with win over Romania

Dimitri Payet was the star of the show, as France got Euro 2016 underway, with a 2-1 win over Romania on Friday.

The hosts struggled to break down the East Europeans in the first half, which ended goalless. But they Olivier Giroud got on the end of Payet’s cross to open scoring early in the second half.

Patrice Evra was punished for a foul inside the area and Bogdan Stancu stepped up to equalize from the spot.

Payet had the final say, as he curled in a stunning effort in the dying moments of the game, to send the entire nation into a frenzy.

Real Madrid are ready to outbid Manchester United for Juventus star Paul Pogba.

Manchester United signing Eric Bailly faces failing his UK work permit application.

The Times says the deal is still subject to a work permit and Bailly, 22, hasn’t played enough games for the Ivory Coast to qualify.

Antonio Conte Wants Oscar At Chelsea

Antonio Conte has reportedly told Oscar that he wants to keep him at Chelsea.

According to the Daily Express, the incoming Blues manager is eager to retain the services of the Brazilian midfielder this summer.

Oscar, 24, has been heavily linked with a potential transfer to Italian giants Juventus while some Chinese clubs have shown interest, but it appears as though he will not be leaving West London anytime soon.

It is understood that Conte wants to give Oscar the chance to prove himself at Stamford Bridge and will avoid selling him to his former club.

Keshi has gone to meet his wife – Emma Ado

Following the shocking news of the death of Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, one time coach of Super Eagles of Nigeria, Emmanuel Ado his brother and manager in Nigeria has said that the Big Boss, which was Keshi's nickname, has gone to meet his wife.

Keshi died at the early hours of Wednesday in Benin at an undisclosed hospital.

Emma Ado said that Keshi who was in Nigeria to attend to the grave side of his wife never recovered form the death Kate Keshi.

It will be recalled that Kate (née Abureme) died of cancer in December 2015, and they were married for 33 years.

Ado said 'Keshi never recovered from the death of Kate they were inseparateable. He has gone to meet Kate'

'Since the wife died Keshi has kept on mourning and  has been in sorrow. All these time Keshi has been acting, giving the impression that he was fine and man enough to bear the sorrow but the truth actually is that he was down and in pain over the death of his wife.

'From companionship to cooking and other domestic matters nobody could be like his wife to him they were irreplaceable. The man just went to join her'

According to reports the wife, Kate made Keshi a responsible man and Keshi was always talking about her.

Also Sunday Oliseh, Keshi's for teammate and former coach of the Super Eagles, who took over after Keshi was axed as the Super Eagles coach, has described the news of the death of Keshi as horrible and sad.

Oliseh on his twitter handle @SundayOOliseh said 'Horrible news & Sad day as Our legendary Captain & brother Stephen Keshi dies.May his blessed soul rest in peace.we lost an iconic Hero 2day.

Another of Keshi'sfriend who spoke on condition of anonymity said "He was not ill at all, never showed any signs of illness, but we suspect he never got over the death of his wife," .
