Day-old baby found dead in Ekiti river

The body of a day-old baby was Saturday morning discovered in a river along Ijogbo/Atikankan junction in Ado-Ekiti.

Residents and commuters plying the route all rushed to the scene to take a look at the dead baby.

Some residents and shop owners around the area rained curses on the mother of the baby for dumping such an innocent male child in the river after giving birth.

The baby was dumped along side the placenta.

Residents suspect that the baby must have been killed by the mother and dumped inside the river at night.

One of the residents, who declined to mention her name, said the baby must have been dumped into the river by a prostitute.

“Only a wicked woman, who lacks conscience will do such an act. The woman does not know the consequences of her action.

In a situation where some women are crying to God to bless them with a child, another one gave birth to such a handsome baby boy and dumped him inside the river. What a sad situation”, one of the residents lamented.

The incident caused traffic gridlock along the busy Ijigbo/Irona market road as residents, drivers, and okada riders stopped at the scene.

Policemen later got to the place and took the body of the baby away.

30-year-old woman kill her newborn in Borno IDP camp

The Borno State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, on Monday arrested a 30-year-old woman for killing her new born baby in an Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, camp in the Dikwa area of the state.

The woman, simply identified as Asma’u, reportedly confessed to the NSCDC Commandant in the state, Ibrahim Abdullahi.

According to the NSCDC Commandant, “during interrogation, she reportedly confessed to the act.”

Abdullahi said Asma’u put to birth on June 1, after she had successfully hidden the pregnancy from others but shortly after delivering the baby, she sneaked out and dumped the new born in a pit toilet.

Narrating how the suspect was caught, the Commandant said, “Immediately she committed the atrocity, she fled the camp.

“Our attention was drawn to the dastardly act after three days when the corpse started smelling in the pit.

“We conducted our investigation and were able to trace her through a man named Gulumba, the person that brought her to the camp.

“The case had since been referred to the Borno Police Command for further prosecution and interrogation.

“This is not the first case; IDPs on several occasions had been caught indulging in all sorts of anti-social behavior, like prostitution, murder and illicit drug abuse, among others,” Abdullahi told newsmen in the state.
